Frequently Asked Questions

Question: I don't know or have forgotten my password. How do I reset it?
Answer: You can request a password reset by visiting this page.

Question: My recommendation status is "Pending". What does that mean?
Answer: When requesting an external recommendation, the task will show as "Pending" before the recommender has submitted their recommendation. The task will be marked "Completed" when the recommender has submitted their recommendation.

Question: The dates/times associated with my submitted material seem to be a few hours off. Why is this?
Answer: This happens when we are unaware of your local timezone. Please set your timezone in your account settings page.

Nominations FAQ

Question: I am not a member of the RSC, but I would still like to nominate someone. How can I do this?

Answer: For the majority of our Prizes and Awards, only RSC members will be eligible to make a nomination (with the exception of the Barrer Award, the Beilby Medal and Prize, the Higher Education Technical Excellence Award, the George and Christine Sonsovsky Award in Cancer Therapy, the Inclusion & Diversity Prize, the Schools Education Award, the RSC-SCF Joint Lectureship in Chemical Sciences, the Alexander Todd-Hans Krebs Lectureship in Chemical Sciences, and all of our Industry Awards).

You could ask a colleague who is an RSC member to make this nomination for you, or you could consider joining the Royal Society of Chemistry. This would allow you to make a nomination for our Prizes and Awards and access the range of additional benefits that RSC members are entitled to. To find out more, please visit http://www.rsc.org/membership-and-community/join/.

Question: How do I nominate someone to win a Prize or Award? Or I have just emailed in my nomination to the RSC Awards e-mail address, is that ok?

Answer: To make a nomination you will need to use our online nomination system. Nominations submitted to the RSC Awards e-mail address will not be valid and you will be contacted at a later date to request that you upload these to our system. The site that you need to access to make your nomination is http://www.rscawards.fluidreview.com/. Please note that to make a nomination for the majority of our prizes and awards you will need your membership number. If you have used the site before you will need your login details, otherwise you will need to sign up to the site (this is a very quick process). Please carefully read the online guidelines for your particular prize or award before making your nomination. A list of all of the prizes and awards currently open can be found at http://www.rsc.org/awards.

Question: Can I nominate someone who has previously won an RSC Prize or Award?

Answer: Yes, as long as you are not nominating them for substantially the same body of work that was recognised in their previous prize/award. When completing the nomination, we will ask for details of any previous Prizes or Awards, and how the nomination differs from the work that the nominee was previously awarded for.

Question: How do I know if the Prize or Award I am nominating for requires me to supply referees?

Answer: Not all of our prizes and awards permit references to support an application, but for some these are essential. As a general rule, our early- or mid-career prizes and awards are likely to require referees. Please carefully read the online guidelines for your particular prize or award to find out more information on what is required for a nomination. A list of all of the prizes and awards currently open can be found at http://www.rsc.org/awards-funding/awards.

Please note, if a prize or award does not require references, we will not accept any references submitted as part of the nomination.

Question: How does the reference process work?

Answer: For the prizes and awards that require referees, the nominator is required to provide the names and email addresses of two referees who can provide a reference for the nominee. Please inform referees of the nomination, as the awards system will contact them as soon as these details are submitted. Referees do not have to be RSC members.

Referees will be contacted automatically by the online system and given a link to upload their reference. Referees are required to complete their reference no later than 17.00 PM GMT on 31 January 2019. We will send one e-mail reminder only to the referee. If references are not received by this deadline, the nomination will not be valid.

It is the responsibility of the nominator to ensure that referees submit their references before the deadline, as we cannot accept nominations with late references.

Question: Does the character limit for the supporting statement and references include spaces? Can I include pictures/formulae in my supporting statement?

Answer: No, the character limit does not count the spaces, it only counts the characters used. Unfortunately, you are not able to submit pictures or formulae into the supporting statement. If you feel these are essential, we suggest hosting them on a webpage or finding them online, then adding the web link into the supporting statement.

Question: Can I submit my nomination late?

Answer: No. Our nomination period runs from 1 October to 15 January, providing over 3 months in which to submit a nomination. To ensure fairness to all nominations that have been received on time, we are unable to accept late nominations received after the deadline of 17.00 PM GMT on 15 January 2019. We would therefore strongly encourage anyone considering making a nomination to do so as early as possible during the nomination period.

It is also the responsibility of the nominator to ensure that referees submit their references before the referee deadline of 17.00 PM GMT on 31 January 2019. We cannot accept nominations with late references submitted.

We reserve the right to amend the nomination deadline should unforseen circumstances (e.g. a substantial technical problem with our nomination system) have a significant impact on our Prizes and Awards Programme. Such decisions will be taken by RSC Awards staff to maximise the overall fairness to potential nominators, nominees and our Prizes and Awards Programme as a whole.
